June: Here today, gone tomorrow (how is it already July?!)
Snapdragon and campanula harvest taking off!
From the Field
Popping off the top!
With the mad dash of May behind us, we’re beginning to reap the rewards of our blood, sweat and tears. Our morning harvests are starting to fill the farm van with buckets of blooms and sweet smelling delights. Until someone invents smell-o-vision, you’ll just have to trust us on that one.
Did you know flowers are happiest when harvested in the earning morning before the heat of the day? This is when their stems are full of moisture, and the flowers are the most resilient to being cut and stored in the cooler. Flowers are perishable items and have a very short shelf life. In order to prolong their shelf life to ensure they get sold and fully enjoyed, our morning harvests start daily at 7 a.m. Pretty soon we’ll be up even before the sun!
What’s Blooming Now
Peonies, campanula, dahlias, yarrow, foxgloves, snapdragons, and MORE are heading out the door daily in our wedding buckets, subscription bouquets, florist orders, and custom arrangements. This is a great time of the year to be a flower farmer!
Volunteer with us!
If you’d like to spend a little time under the sun with us, consider joining our second volunteer weeding event on:
Tuesday July 14th from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
We’ll set you up with other like-minded locals excited to get some dirt under their nails to tackle the weeds that forever haunt our dreams. Please RSVP to this email if you can make it!
What’s New
The mighty Rathvinden team has grown! We welcomed Anzhelika earlier this summer to contribute her expertise and experience to the growing list of to-dos we encounter daily. She has worked on both flower and veggie farms in the recent past, which means she already knows much more than we do about farming! We are SO GRATEFUL to have her on the team.
Also joining the crew this summer is Sebastian! Sebby is Paige’s 1.5 year old Golden Retriever puppy whose boundless energy keeps us on our toes. If you happen to come by the farm when he’s around, he’ll be forever grateful for your belly rubs and cooing attention.
We would be remiss if we didn’t give an honorable mention to the many predator bugs we’ve found devouring the hungry aphids around the farm this summer. Fiona has set up a few experimental laboratories in the lower field (read: flowers getting demo-ed by aphids) to watch what predator bugs visit for a little sustenance. Ideally, the predator bugs multiply and replenish rather than the aphids. Still TBD. :)
Behind the Blooms
This year has had many highs and lows on the farm - aka - just another year in the life of a farmer! Profit margins are tight, weather is unpredictable, flower demand waxes and wanes, and yet we persist! Throughout all this, June was our most profitable month ever, and we want to THANK ALL OF YOU for your unwavering support. It is your subscription purchases, friend referrals, bouquet requests, volunteer time, positive reviews, event participation, and social media shares that keep this engine rolling. Our muscles are sore but our hearts are grateful.

As always, thank you for your support, flower purchases, friend referrals, and belief in our little farm and what we’re doing.
We know it would be so much easier to just till the soil, hire cheap labor, and plant easy flowers. Instead, we’re committed to doing something different. We’re committed to paying our people a living wage, building up our ecosystem by using organic and regenerative practices, and supporting our community with events and workshops. We may be small but we’re also mighty!
